Hi Dan,

About the knots he uses I have to ask him, probably next meeting in january. About the where : he is fishing in the North Sea near England as far as I know.

He is probably fishing on the Dogger Bank then Andre.
For those interested in these artifacts - the ‘dogs bone’ shape article (top right) is, as far as I can make out from Steel’s - Masting and Rigging, a headstick for a triangular sail, to stop it from twisting. the one depicted is shown on the Jib of a Sloop. The headstick is secured to the top of the sail in a horizontal plane and the luff and leach boltropes pass from an eye above the stick, through the two holes and down along the sail.
Does anyone know what the tapered stick with a grouved hole in it is for?

Brrrr. But my “where” was aimed not at the boat but the knots in regard
to the gear–what knots at which places.

I had a chance to again peruse commercial fishers’ knotting in the general
vicinity of one of Ashley’s old haunts (cf. ABOK p.7ff)–not this
time the Cohansey & Bridgeton but the Maurice River & Bivalve, though
this trip focused on the east side of the river: Dorchester, Leesburg, &
Heislerville. Crab pots were in, end of a season, and conch pots, too,
maybe more temporarily for some dredging, I heard? I took a few notes.

I’ve lurked here for a while but I must complement you, André, on your site and all the great knot pictures! I will be sure to visit De Hoop and the museum next time I’m in NL.

Found it.

Meetings every last Saturday of the month except December.
(But check before booking because at some times we need to change a date.)

If you come to our country at a different date it is also a good idea to check because the boat sometimes will be open at other days.

Thank you for your kind words. I hope to meet you in Rotterdam when you are in the NL. And yes the picture is showing De Hoop. It’s the small vessel on the quay side, left of the large warship.
