i’ve just bought some crystal points that i’d like to make into necklaces, but i don’t want to destroy the integrity of the stone by drilling holes / using an adhesive to attach them. I’ve seen it done before by weaving a delicate tight-fitting net around the stone with a loop at the top to attach to the necklace - are any of you familiar with this technique and can link me a tutorial?
I’ve no experience of netting, but I remembered seeing a tutorial on Stormdrane’s blog for a net-covered bottle that might help. Unfortunately my mobile won’t paste into the forum text boxes, but if you search for Stormdrane you’ll easily find it. There was another, but I haven’t tracked it down yet; I last looked at it 18 months ago.
My main thought was that you could use the sorts of rings that jewellers use to attach charms to bracelets for a base to rest the crystal on, and then use what in the UK is called invisible thread to make the net. Invisible thread is sewing thread made of transparent nylon, I can buy it in any haberdashers.
But, it’s tricky for knotting: fine enough to go through the needle of a sewing machine, and nylon to boot. You might have to experiment with monofilament fishing line knots to work it, but a fisherman would advise better than I on that. My focus was a method that wouldn’t obscure the crystals.
One idea is to use adhesive to secure the cord to the item and then do a decorative knot, such as a Turks head, to cover the attachment area. Give you an excuse to learn some new knots.
Another idea along the lines of a net is exactly that, a net. Nets are used around glass float and there are many ways to do it. Needle hitching like Tony suggested is a good idea, using nylon or fine strong cord will either enhance the look or at least not detract from it.
Hi!
It would be a great help to see a photo of the item you intend to cover.
In general, though, I agree with those who recommend half-hitching as a way to make a fine, close-fitting netting around an object.
If you can find someone knowing how to cover a glass float with a net, That would work, I think. Perhaps you might find some instructions on the net. Do a search on “glass float covering for fishing floats”, or something like that. I think the floats and net covering were Japanese in origin. I know only one person that does that, Roy Chapman. He is and IGKT member, so you might find him in the IGKT directory. I “may” have downloaded some of his instructions a few years back, so I’ll search my computer & see what comes up.
I did a google search for “glass fishing net float”, and found a picture of one. The floats are, of course, larger than the stones (I think) you have, but you could use smaller cord???
