Spherical Knots? Ashley 2218

I just got done with Ashley 2218, the “handsome” one, not the prolate spheroid or the “practical” one. #2218 would make a great covering for juggling balls!
.
Are there any other spherical knots out there, and how do you tie them? (Don’t say monkey fist, mine always look like poo.)

Thanks in advance, carjug

Hi carjug,

Get ready to be amazed!!!

Barry Brown gave us a link below to some great Globes knots:

You can find some interesting globe knots tied in the hand in the French IGKT gallery. They are designed by Luc Prouveur. this set is of an 18 face globe knot, easy to follow. http://igktfrance.com/galerie_photo/thumbnails-33.htmlthere are others in the gallery but not all he has done. I have tied his 96 face globe knot in the hand very easily but I am not sure where you will find instructions for that one.

I hope this gets you started.
Take care,
Barry

This is a link to some grids posted at KHWW. Click on the link “3 closed end Turks Heads”, and print the pages. Cut out the grid, and wrap it around a toilet paper tube. Fill the tube with newspaper, place nails at the gray doughnuts, and follow the over under pattern on the grid. These knots are very similar to Ashley 2218, except the begining and the end are at the same place, so it is much easier to double the plies, and hide the ends.

When I was taught how to tie these knots, my Grandfather called them Closed End Turks Heads. They are also called Globe Knots, and they tighten up into a nice sphere. The 5 x 8 closed is the same knot as Ashley 2217, but since it is tied on a tube instead of a flat surface, it’s much easier to transfer around a ball.

If a toilet paper tube is not large enough for the size knot you need, you can click on the insert in the Word document, and scale up the grid by dragging on the insert corners. When you print the grid, tape it into a cylinder, insert a roll of some newspaper Then let the roll expand to the size of the tube.

Carjug, there are some multi-coloured 2218s in my small and not-updated-for-yonks KHWW gallery that might be of interest - “licorice allsorts” key floats:

Those are really nice SlipJig! Great job!

I have just ordered the Globe Knot Cookbook and also the Turks Head Kit from http://www.khww.net/news.php?readmore=27

I will let you know how I got on, I suppose even better I will have to show you all a result!!!

I wil bring some extra cord to Ft Cumberland suitable for this tool - but I warn you now it is in a ‘rats nest’

Fairlead

I am very good at the “Rats Nest” I have a multi coloured one!!

Even the storage of rope is a problem, I suppose the best solution is to hang it properly?

Thanks again Barry,

Before flying to TX to welcome our new grandson to the family, I printed out the tuts for the 18 and 45 face globe knots designed by Luc Prouveur. Here’s my first attempt at the 18 face globe. I’ve tied the 45 face globe as well but will have to post a pic later for that one as I’m still working on it. I used 5/32" line from WalMart on a 1" wooden ball core and gave it to my son in law who just happens to love the FL Gators. He loved it.

Hanging on a knarly barked tree here in TX.

Hi
I also got the globe knot cook book. It makes it so much easier then tying those knots the old fashioned way from the ABOK.
I don’t want to miss it again.
One of my favorites is the one with 40 facettes (in the book its called 40 GRK)

Here two sets of juggling balls (“Ireland” and “Germany”) with the 40 GRK tied around pool balls as a core

Cracking knots there!!!

I also recently purchased the cookbooks, I have to say I am well impressed with what you get for your money.

Does anyone know why “45 GRK” is named such? I understand the facets bit but when it comes to " 23 WPW" do the letters mean anything?

I take it your local pub doesn’t mind playing pool without a full set of balls?

 pst, don’t tell.
I actually got them from our pool table at work. Some wisecracker (not me) had stolen the black ball and the white ball.
Since the set was useless, they were put in the bin, were I found them and thought that I have better use for them.
They are nice to work with as they are just the right size and weight and have a smooth surface.

I still have 8 left but I already had a look at amazon. I found a set for around 12 Euro in case I need some more.
The pool table at work got a new set a few days after and so far, fingers crossed, none has gone missing.

I wondered myself

I have just sent an email to Don, asking that question.
My guess was that the software that spits out the recipes just assings a random letter combination to keep them appart, but that is just a shot in the dark.
Lets see what Don says. I hope its not a “trade secret”.

I’ll let everybody in on the secret of the three letter codes… They mean nothing. Well, almost nothing.

While I was developing the knots and the book, I had several different knots with the same number of crossings… (I actually had 5-7 different knots of some crossing counts!) So, in the interest of sanity, I started using three more or less random letters to denote the individual knots. It stuck. some of the letters have some meaning, like GRK stands for the colors of the first one that I tied (it was blue and white)… 176KDB is the larges one shown in the Globe Knot Cookbook… KDB is my Dad’s initials. Without him the book never woudl have happened.

So, that’s the story.

-Don B.

For anyone that is interested in the Turks Head and the Globe Knot Cookbooks they really are worth getting!! You don’t just get a book, but you also get all the stuff you need to get you started to create some lovely works of art.

Just one word of warning though, I ordered mine here in the UK (from USA) and customs held the parcel until I paid the ransom!!! I was a bit disappointed at the time, but since using the books and kit, it was worth every penny that customs robbed me!!!

A note that might be helpfull when you order from the USA, ask the sender to tick the box saying it is a gift, then the tax man leaves you alone… this works the other way too if you post to the states. Lets hope Mr. IR does not read this LOL

I’ve never sold one piece of my work but have given them to many of my family or friends and have gotten so much just from that. My friend at work told me a while back that while he was getting his haircut, the girl cutting his hair told him that she does macrame and commented to him that whoever tied his key fob (a TH one I gave him with the Mets colors) really knew what he was doing. My friend is one of the biggest Mets fans there are and was amazed when I gave him that fob. He would tell everyone that would listen about it and when I gave it to him he said people will know him by his key fob.

Well, my friend lost his TH key fob. He was so sad when telling me. lol I told him not to worry and set off to make him an 18 face globe knot in hand. Hope he has better luck with this one.

Thanks again to all you guys and gals for all your help making me the guy that “knows what he’s doing” (in at least one person’s view LOL).
