Is there any way to display post responses in reverse order, newest first? Better yet, newest unread first? For some reason I’m having a difficult time parsing the response stream… Maybe I need to find a better theme?

No there is no way to invert the order of display of post responses so they are newest first.
You can however scroll instantly down to the bottom (latest reply) by clicking on the date/time on the bottom of the right-hand time-scroller
And then you can scroll upwards to see each post in reverse order, back to where you were.
There will be a red line at the last post that Discourse is aware you read.
