What is this knot ?

Hi !

Anyone can tell what this knot name is ?

Good quizz !

my answer is Sword Mat. Tony

Hi !
Not a sword mat Tony.!
I see why you found that, there is a strong similitude in the
final ‘weaving’ ( just realized that while reading your answer.)
Cheers.
Charles

Nautile,
Is this a serious question?
If so, can you tell us a little more about this knot, like where did you find it, is it your own invention and are you looking for the proper name…
Or is this a quiz? If so, what is the prize?

I would call it a woven knot, but I did not try to find it in the books yet.

Willeke

Hi Willeke!
If by “serious” you mean the question is not a joke or an attempt to make fun of someone then it is serious, but not as in “deadly serious” ;D
I certainly did not invent the knot and nobody can claim (s)he invented it without being called a lier and a cheat.

It is a very old knot or rather, mostly, it is not a very old REAL knot though I made it real it seems ( yeah muddying the waters I am now and quite wantonly now! while at the same time giving “pointers”) but its design is lost in the mist of times.

I am certainly not searching for its identification since I know it. What would be the point of a quiz I do not know the answer to ?
Tony’s try was in fact a very good one even if it is a miseading one! Darker and darker is it not? BTW thank you Tony for playing without shyness or second guessing my intent.

Sometimes things are uncomplicated being just what they are, face value so to speak and nothing else. No hidden agenda here Willeke, sleep soundly, all is well in the town!

It was just to give something to play with, a sort of social engineering if you want.

I like to joke but I never try try to bring ridicule. onto somebody.

I missed the word Quizz in your post.
Next time maybe a little more in explanation?

Looking at the shape, it might have been a kind of fender.

Willeke

Hi Willeke !
FENDer !
no it is not though in a way it is !
I mean it could be used to “fend” off some bad things!
Curiouser and curiouser is it not ?
All will become clear in time.

A very obscure tip : it is for eterny and a day as the Irishes say.
Clearer ? NO ? It should have been though! :stuck_out_tongue:
Cheers!

Hello Charles!

I have a feeling that this is a Pan Chang - it has a similar structure (weave side to side like sword mat and over under to follow), except that it has more crossings than weaves, making it a little unusual. Also the ends come out on opposite sides instead of the center which is probably because of the odd number of crossings Vs. weaves. I’ll just have to try and tie it!

Thanks for the thinking cap exercise!

Lindsey

Hello Lindsey,

Thank you for your contribution.

It is not a Pan Chang knot yet the trail you followed is good. Very good.

There is only one short doubling in the knot to find.
It was necessary to make one extremity goindg out on the other side so I could get a nice symmetry.

I borrowed the Pan chang image from here, there are other good things there.

Cheers.

ADDED :
Here is a really close-up photography of the knot.

AGAIN AN ADDITION :
A thousand beggings of pardon Lindsey.
Read too fast OF COURSE YOU ARE RIGHT IT IS A SORT OF PAN CHANG but as you wrote it is not same Pan Chang as the one I put in the link to Pan Chang.
You got the right answer but I will wait tomorrow before giving the exact diagram of this one which is indeed
unusual even in its drawn aspect.
Sorry again Lindsey you are the best and I did not saw it in time this morning.

hello nautile…
…this is a beautiful little knot…are you going to show how it is made?!..
Dan-Alaska

Hello Dan_Alaska !
Glad to see you here.
Your contribution wins others pointers for the Questing Company!

I will try to have compassion while regretting I have no wisdom and give a pointers inside a pointers so that this does not lead into infinity in an endless quest…

So less crypticaly : yes I will give a link to the diagram I used.
In fact almost all of you, if not all, have seen this knot in a form or another but most probably never as a knotting

5 tips more you have now. All perfectly clear I assure you !

Cheers

Hi ,

All is revealed here

Template I used to do it with one stand by the “hedgehog’s method” ( pins and corkboard ) you can get here

Thank you all for having come to play with this knot.
As already written in the addition to my post answering to you most sorry again Lindsey, it was too much finicky to ask for the exact formula when you got the main trend Pan Chang or Infinity Knot or Endless Knot.

What is surprising to me is the getting of a ovoidal/rectangular knot from what is “apparently” a square template.
I had first intended to tripled it but it was so difficult to dress and set in a pleasant manner that I let it a one passage only doubling a short way just to get a symetrical ‘outing’ of the other tail.

In fact I tried before that one to do this celtic knot but it came out ugly even when trying an interlocking where each pair of black points is.
May be somebody will succeed.

Since the Sky ( circle ) was refused to me I went to Earth ( Square ) and got only a human rectangle! The one which was the object of the quiz.

The reason this knot was difficult to recognize is that usually it is shown as a symbolic representation and not as a real knot.

Indeed the knotting comes out quite different from the drawing showing again that structure and geometry must not be confused with each other !

Thank you Charles for your kind remarks.

Of course, now I see that this is indeed the Buddhist symbol and I failed to see that you had drawn the cut part out to one side when I first looked at it. Now that I have tried it it comes together just as you have it pictured. You are quite right also about structure and geometry - have you written anything for KM? It would be most interesting to hear others’ point of view who do not subscribe to this forum.

Lindsey

Hello Charles,
