A magician's request...

Dear All

My family are having a couple of days in North Wales. At the Greenwood Forest Park we met a magician named Howard Hughes who did the “knot in a (skipping) rope and cut the bight” trick. But he did several knots. I was not able to see clearly (not fast enough with my driving glasses) what he was tying. The first looked something like an Alpine/Butterfly, the others just overhand connectors of one loose end to another.

But he really got my attention when he said: “You’ve heard of the reef knot, thief knot and what-knot… Well this is a not-knot.” And he pulled the knots out and there it was, all one unbroken cord. Because most people have heard of the reef knot, but not so many of the thief knot. And I remembered hearing of the whatknot in my first Knotting Matters.

A quick Google search turned up mention of the whatknot/grief knot on Notable Knot Index (thanks, Roo!).

So I went to say to him that there really was a knot called whatknot, which delighted him no end (pun intended), and to invite him to join us.

He isn’t really interested in tying knots, but he would like some unusual or exotic genuine knot names to use in that part of his show. I couldn’t think of anything much more exotic than Simple Simon or Rosenthal. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

He also asked if there really was a “not-knot”, or not? Tongue-in-cheek, I can only offer a slip knot as a not-knot

Legend (or truth?) has it that Matthew Walker saved his neck from the noose by tying a knot that the judge couldn’t untie. The MWK is eyepleasing as well as exotic.

How about:

monkey’s fist
cat’s paw
turk’s head
and perhaps that part of a dog’s anatomy meaning a back splice

Ok, I don’t mind being shown up for a permanent amateur  Which particular bit would that be - or a discrete link leading to it, as you are so tactful in mentioning it

It’s a slang term - a dog’s [penis] but one in common use since the 1800s to describe a back splice.

Poor dogs.. At work we have a dog leg which is a 12 inch eye bolt with an eye nut and shackle at one end. And then we have the dog balls which is two round ball looking things (or used to be round) that we put in the anchor head to bond the guy to the anchor head.
