ABOK 2206

A friend asked about my tutoruial on ABOK 2206 that was available at KHWW. I have re-done it and posted it at

In the world of Turks Heads, that is a 4 Lead x 4 Bight TH. A regular Monkeys Fist is a 3 Lead x 3 Bight TH. You can also tie a 5 Lead x 5 Bight TH, a 6 x 6, etc. I recently got a delivery of random colors of paracord, I think I have a new project. Now, what to cover?

In this particular knot in the initial set-up you have to lay down the desired number of turns for each circle before moving on to the next circle. You can not follow the lead around to double or triple the knot as you can in a turks head knot. In my undestanding herein lies the difference between a turks head knot and a monkey fist. Tony

You are correct, a Turks Head tied with a single line must follow the rules of ABOK 1314. A Monkey Fist is a knot of interconnected loops. A Monkey Fist can be tied with a single line if you can find a nice way to disguise the transition from one loop into the next.

I actually use a 3 Lead x 4 Bight Turks Head as a sacrificial knot to tie a double (4 loop) Monkey Fist. I tie the 3L x 4B TH, and use a second line to start doubling the knot. I pass up to the top of the knot, and then instead of following the same lead down, I skip to the next bight, and follow that one. It turns out the skipping one bight puts me on the same lead as the one I started on to double the knot. A few passes following the second line, and I find a way to transition to the next loop. This new loop will then follow the same pattern of doubling the sacrificial knot up to the top of the knot, skip over one bight, and then follow down to where you are tying the second loop. Follow on with the third and fourth loops, and then remove the initial (sacrificial) knot. You should have a 4 loop Monkey Fist.

I will use the same method to tie a 5 loop Monkey Fist, except I will start with a 5 Bight sacrificial TH, and I will use 5 different colors, so it will be apparent that the finished knot isn’t a Turks Head, but something a little different.
