Basement Pole Knot/Wrap

Hello- I came across this site randomly via a Google search for knots. This looks like the place to be for odd knot creations. Anyway, I have a 3-4 inch diameter support pole in my finished basement. I wrapped the pole with sisal rope for my cats to use as a scratching post. I just started at the top and continued wrapping the pole and tied it off at the bottom. It held up through the years but now is unraveling or is frayed by the cats and is coming loose. I thought that a better method of wrapping the pole would help this. I am looking for a knot that can be used to wrap the pole and look nice but will not unravel as quickly. I have seen this wrap aboard ships in the past but don’t know what it is called. It appears to be a spiral wrapped rope with a single piece of rope skirting the outside of it. For some reason a turks head comes to mind, but I didn’t see anything like it online. Another similar knot seemed to be a French Whipping, but I cannot find any info on how to do this to a solid pole. Thanks for any info!

It can be done with the end of the line. It just takes time.
