Begleri DIY (easy stocking stuffers!)

Begleri are a skill toy that can be made with 2 hex nuts and a length of cord. It’s like a cheerleader’s baton or diabolo yoyo, but for just your fingers. You can invest at much or as little knotcraft to the item as you’d like. If an overhand is big enough stopper for the nuts you have purchased, then Bob’s your uncle. There are many DIY videos on YouTube for various knots such as tying a monkey’s fist over a nut (or marble, or ball bearing).

I purchased a pretty, pretty, and expensive set a number of years ago based on the idea that if I did so, I would definitely be motivated to practice and actually acquire the skill. However, I immediately found that my arthritis adjacent knuckles would prefer my metal weights to be nicely padded by cord. sigh. So, I’ve made a few globe knot padded begleri for myself but no matter now much I practice I can’t seem to get past the very beginner exercises. As a knot tyer, I think I have decent fine motor control but that apparently doesn’t translate into dexterity.

I was thinking that this year I’d make a bunch to put into people’s stockings. I’m looking for a good one-sheet to go with explaining sizing (cord length between weights), the activity in general, and some starting exercises. Does anyone know of one? Do I need to write one myself? Hmm, just found a downloadable pamphlet.

Also, does anyone here have any begleri skills? Do you know of any tutorial sources? I’d love to get past my beginner plateau.
