Bell rope for Marine Corps Bell

Here is my latest work. It is a bell rope for Marine Corps Air Station New River and will see daily use. It is a little over 11? in length. The body was built using #45 cord, and the turksheads were done with 15b from Martin Combs. I followed the directions from Vince Brennan?s sight with a few modifications, I went with grafting and a knob knot finisher rather than over two fender hitching and boxing the end as supplied by Vince?s site. The photos are after the last coat of polyurethane so it is not dry yet.

Very nicely done. I’d love to see a picture when it’s hanging from the bell, but your work is very nice standing alone.

Pat

As requested here is a picture of it hanging on the bell.

I hope so the first thing the station SgtMaj did when I handed it to him was try and bend it and twist it, his response was dang killer I think this will last the next 50 years.

Excellent work there!

What finishing solution if any did you use?

Thank you Johnny I used a clear polyurethane I was originally going to use Spar varnish but the wife liked the polyurethane better.

Hey thats real nice. I like it . Well done

Ray

Did you use it full strength of dilute it before applying?

Have to also ask, what is Spar varnish?

Full strength although if I had to do it again I would dilute it. Spar varnish is just varnish but it is what is recommended by vince at frayedknotart.both discolor the rope polyurethane a little less but I like the golden color it gives the rope

Yes, discolouration is a massive problem with some materials. In some cases a clear finish can turn a light coloured rope black.

Can you imagine all that effort and then spoiling it on the last step?

still trying to find the mix that produces a protective coat without to0 much discoloration or the details getting filled in.

Here is a post on just that subject: http://igkt.net/sm/index.php?topic=734.0
