Fancy and Decorative Knotwork

I’ve wanted to tie a belt for awhile now, but I need some advice. What are some good methods for making the “buckling” end of the belt? Should a simple square knot be tied, or some other fancy knot? Would you need a metal buckle?

I was thinking of using a Solomon Bar for the belt itself, but would you suggest anything different?

I’ve also found that with a thicker diameter rope, the Celtic Bar Knot from JD makes a nice belt as well.

IN reference to the buckling question, there’s a pretty good suggestion in one of the books JD co-wrote. Their belt design starts with a prosperity knot tied a few inches from a bight, and just wraps around the waist. When the belt comes around the waist back to the bight, it’s looped through and tied back on itself. The properity knot makes a nice looking buckle on it’s own. For a pirate costume, I modified the idea a little. Since the prosperity knot itself is really just an open-ended ocean braid mat that hasn’t been douled or tripled, I tied it closer to the bight, as if it were the ocean braid mat, and had the ends coming off one side. I then rand a second rope through it, doubling the mat design, again having the ends of that rope coming off to the same side as before. I took a third rope, and looped it through the holes in the mat closest to the side where the ends came out of. This gave me six total lines running off one side of the mat, which I was able to then briad using JD’s Celtic Bar Knot. It really is a nice design. I’ve attached a pic of it.
