Grief knot and a related bend

Hi,

I just learned about the trick you can do with a grief knot by twisting the working ends, and was playing around to try and figure out a quick way to tie a grief knot.

The way I came up with is to start like a square knot, but instead of twisting the two strands again, tuck them both through the twist in the middle. This capsises into a grief knot The grief knot (as it’s illustrated) capsises into this form.

Anymoose, my ABOK hasn’t arrived yet, and I couldn’t find it on wikipedia, so I wanted to ask if there is any info to be had on a related knot, that reminds me a bit of Ashley’s bend. It’s very simple to tie: use this same quick method for a grief knot, but start with a surgeon’s knot instead:

and here is the other side of the third step:

and also a “bottom” and “top” view:

Does this knot have a name? It doesn’t seem to jam but that’s about as much as I’m willing to say about it without looking like an idiot.

Since no claim has been made, I dub this knot the Stingy Bend, named after a friend of mine.

I ordered Symmetric Bends in the hopes of understanding it better, and maybe I will update on who actually discovered it first, and why it sucks.

Ciao ciao,
