Stepped over it while searching for TH tassels… ![]()
Can you please tell more about this knot?
Have you made it, if so, did you use a template?
Or have you just found the picture? If so, where?
Willeke
no, I found it here:
http://www.militaryheritage.com/knot.htm
Thanks.
There are a lot more beauties on that site!

I do not like the Royal Navy Sword Knot on that site - part of it is missing and so are two knots.
This is mine, and how it should look
Gordon
Hi Gordon,
Ah, the internet.. anyone can play. Some of the knots posted at the URL were well done, don’t you think? I really am in accord with the title of this thread… “Just a nice Knot”. But maybe with a kind word we (as IGKT) can get this knotter into the fold and offer corrections for his historical errors. As a knotter I love this work but I can understand that he may think he has historical accuracy where perhaps there is room for improvement, or he may be spot on. I often put my foot in my mouth. Sometimes it fits perfectly. But perhaps he has an authenticated knot to work from and then we can learn from him. Since I’ll not be making display pieces.. but just enjoying some knots.. for me it will still be: Just an nice knot. For the author of the post… Please do no be daunted. If you know your knot to be historically correct… contest it with IGKT members at this site. Of course remember there may not have been a “hand book for the sword knots” so several knots may have been “official”.
very nice ![]()
The knot certainly looks like a Turks Head tied with the black cord and two gold cords. It appears that an additional gold cord is added alongside as the knot gets wider, and is let out of the knot on the way back down after going through the top bight. I can’t see the bottom of the knot, but it appears to be a 5 Bight x 19 Lead Turks Head (I can draw a toilet paper tube template if anybody is intereted).
I would be very interested to see what the core of the knot is. The shape suggests a solid core, perhaps of wood, but how are the two leads attached to it? Are the two leads tied in a way that creates the acorn shape? Is the knot soft, and bendable? A picture may be worth a thouseand words, but there is nothing like holding it in your hands.
This is beautiful work, with two different types of line that have the color matching very well. A very nice decoration.

Pat,
I have the original one that came with the sword somewhere (had to buy this one new for Mountbatten’s Funeral) - if I can find it I will do some investigative surgery and post the results.
One question I have is how the people that made them (Maltese once but now Indian I believe) pulled the knots up tight because the cord is in fact a gold wire coil around a very fine cotton core - ie VERY delicate!

Did the swords of the knights in medieval times show any knots? How was the sheath hung to the belt?
