Knot on a rope tension drum

Hi. I?m revising an instructional guide on how to assemble and tighten the parade drums used by the band of His Majesty the King?s Guard of Norway. In the attached picture montage you can see what kind of knot that traditionally has been used to attach the rope to the wooden ring on the snare counterhoop (the bottom wooden ring of the drum). The knot works, but might be replaced by one that is even more aesthetically pleasing. What I would like is a knot that preserves more of the “spiral”-look and can be hidden in towards the shell. By the way: does anybody know what the knot pictured is called?

The hangmans knot is good for coils. The loop itself can be very small. The tail can be made minimal. But there will be three times the rope as core inside the coils.
