Knot tying in a college dorm to create extra space

Hello. I’m in a loft bunk, which is just a bunkbed that requires a ladder to get to, however I don’t have anyone below me. Below my bed is my study desk, which doesn’t have as much space as I need.

How can I use rope, or rope and a few other basic things to create some sling, cabinet, sack, etc to store mostly books? Or really, any suggestions, etc?

The way the bed works is that I basically have a rectangular mesh. It’s hard to explain but if this doesn’t work just imagine the underside of my bed has lots of points I can tie onto. Every hand( 4 inches ), there are rows of this this S-shaped metal wire. These rows are all attached every maybe 8 inches just by a simple C shaped clip. It’s more of a zero with 1/4 of the 0 cut out, but anyways.

Any help? My room is unable to stay clean because I have no place to put things.

Hello Knotme2 and welcome.

A smallish hammock or netted bags come to mind.

But another thought is some suitable planking suspended using scaffold hitches. http://www.surreyknots.org.uk/images/49_Scaffold_Hitch.jpg

Is there any reason you don’t post pics? I’m not being flippant. I’m sincerely curious.

I think that your best course is to find some shelves
that can be set atop your desk; perhaps the top of
the shelves can be secured to the bed against toppling,
but the load on the shelves would be upon the desk.

Then, otherwise, one could suspend some small and
not-so-heavy stuff from tie-in points on the bed.
Those “S” things don’t sound as though they’re able
to support much load. You might be able to hand
some adapted canisters for holding pens etc. via
two cords (spaced, to give stability to the canisters
vs. their twisting/turning).

Presumably the bed has 4 posts of some sort to support it (unless it’s hung off the wall somehow?). In which case are there 4 corners of the bed which take the weight of the mattress (and you!). If so perhaps something as simple as a plank of wood (2 if room) hung by a rope at each corner attached to the bed posts with a hole in each corner of the plank to attach the ropes. A second plank hung below the first by the same ropes might work depending on space available.

I didn’t think of that.
Here goes.

You can see that on the left, I tried to do this. However, it’s not very secure, apparently. One day all of them fell down somehow, so I don’t have very much trust in them. And it’s also not really convenient for taking things in and out of it.

You can tell I tried to weave a mesh, which is more secure, however I couldn’t. I also have much thinner rope to use.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I can’t say I feel safe with just a plank hung, though. I think my concern is that things like books can fall off of it.

If there are any things that I would be able to purchase from target for instance that could do this just as well, by telling from the photographs, I would take those suggestions as well.

When I was in college, I had a similar space. I recall stacking milk crates and using them as shelves. It looks like stuff is so tight in there that you should get accustomed to studying in the library and saving light reading for your room.

I’d avoid hanging stuff from those wires. If somebody gets up there and jumps around (or does something similar if you know what I mean), then expect whatever is hanging from those wires to be unstable. That is, unless you had some over-engineered, overly elaborate rope setup.

If hitched and hung from the rails, there will be more isolation/stability from mattress movement.

You could mount some shelving brackets and planks to the side of the cabinet case (left side of photo)..
There are many non-rope solutions out there, but we’re trying rope or cord related possibilities here.

Maybe something like this > https://www.pinterest.com/pin/475129829410223421 Hitching to the against wall bed rail instead of cleats.

Sorry, what do you mean? Hitch against the wall bed rail?

Is there anything specific I can try?

There isn’t anything wrong with tying things to the bed S-columns though, since it’s my bed. People won’t really jump around up there. But regardless, I would be tying things secure.

I know there are so many places to hitch and tie things to, however I can’t figure out anything specific.

Right now, when I look around my area, the only thing I can think of to do that’s really viable is to create a harness with whatever means to hang from the bed. The current one I have is very un-useful and very flimsy.

Hi Knotme2.

If I am not mistaken, it looks like your bed is against a wall. The top bed’s rail that is parallel and closest to that wall is the rail I was speaking about to hitch the rope shelf to, Instead of using the cleats in the picture.

That can allow the shelf to be stabilized from swinging.
If you hang it from the wire, it can move and probably cause the items to spill off.

Take the modified picture attach and imagine it in your space. Could be a long single shelf or two.

Oh wow, thanks. That’s great. I’ll try that when I can.
What sort of rope do you think I should be using? A few cm thick rope should do it, right?

Regardless, thanks a lot.

You’re welcome.

Depending on the weight of what you’ll ultimately load the shelf with and the quality of the material, I would recommend a rope of 1/2 inch diameter. It might look best too.
When you do decide to do something, please share a picture here.

Small hammock would be my suggestion.

Thanks everyone. I tied it, reinforced with free chopsticks. It didn’t tie off easily, and you can tell I ended up using pure friction to keep it in place, but it worked.

It’s MOSTLY stable.
