Knotted elephant hair bracelet.

How are these made? I can’t get much detail from the picture.

Also, what is elephant hair like? is it tough and springy, anybody know?

How Do Dr

the information you require is in issue 41 of Knotting Matters on page 17, instructions for an African bracelet,( made with corse almost plastic like hair from the Efilump’s tail ) try strimmer line! I do not have this copy, sorry, I only had the index of all the KM’s.
I do know this has been re-published in a later KM ? and on the net, cos I have seen it not long ago.
If I come across it again I will let you know.

Take care,
Barry

We’re going to Whipsnade Zoo tomorrow - I’ll see if I can get close enough, shall I??? If you don’t hear from me again, you’ll know I got just a bit too close ;D

Lesley

Thanks for the info, now I need to locate a KM issue 41!

Any idea if there’s any in the archives?

I did send you an e-mail.
I hope this is what you need.

Willeke

PS I have added a picture of the knot out of KM, cut out of an article signed with G.B.
I think that stands for Geoffrey Budworth.

You are very kind to have taken the trouble to dig that out and send it!
I always want a project at this time of year and I’ve got some nice leather thonging to use making some of these!

I’ve been evaluating the leather over the last few months and It’ll work a treat.

By the way, have you seen the prices they are charging for these things!

ps. any idea what a proper name for the knot is?

My guess is a variant on the overhand sliding loop.

pps Thanks again.

Nice one Willeke

Saves me a lot of time looking through the recent KM’s for the re-print.

Take care,
Barry

I have one of these (bought in Africa back in the late 50’s) somewhere, but cannot find it at the moment.
Although the knot shown in Geoffrey Budworths diagram that Willeke sent is single stranded, the actual Elephant Bracelet is made up of anything from 4 strands of hair upwards.

Gordon

They are generally multistranded, but the basic knot is simply tied with the multi strand to acheive the effect of the sliding knot.

OK Finally got the photo sorted out sorry it’s a bit small!!! Maybe if you click on it, it will go to the larger version.

We had a great time, and actually chose the right day. The weather was beautiful. Today is very windy and very wet!!!

Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Did you manage to shave that elephant’s tail??? ;D If so please make a nice bracelet out of it and put a photo in here to show it to the world.

Happy New Year

André van der Salm

Sorry Andre I didn’t get THAT close, and I didn’t think that it would be appreciated, either by the elephant, or the keeper, who looked really grumpy!!

Actually, I might ask our neighbour who used to be a keeper there if he can get some - leave it with me

Lesley

You know, I live just down the road from Knowsley safari park, I should ask in there, they’ve got loads of heffalumps ;D
