Knotwork for uniforms

I have been contacted and asked for tips on how to make knotwork for uniforms. The requested type of knotwork is like what you can see around the buttons in these pictures:

(What is the proper name for these things, anyway?)

He is not trying to re-create a uniform that has actually existed but creating a new uniform for “live role-play”. This allows more freedom to choose techniques, but on the other hand there is no model to look at.

Do you have any good references? I have looked in my trusty ABOK, and found a few ideas in the range ABOK# 2250 to 2500, but all ideas are welcome!

Also have a look in books on Chinese knot, they do a lot of this kind of fancy work on their buttons.

Which knot to tie also depends on who is going to tie it and how often.
If you are going to tie all the knots for many coats you want something simple like 2304 (which needs to be sewn on to stay in shape)
Or if you only need to tie one set you may want to go for more work like 2264, to much work to make many unless they pay well. But easier sewn on.

If it for a computergame you may only need to make just one, where photos do the rest, then you can make a knot as fancy as you want, but if you design and they need to make it themselfs think about the carrickbend on the bight that is also the 3 lead 4 bight TH.

Decorative cords for fastening clothes are often referred to as “button frogs” or “frog fasteners” or just “frogs”.

To double check, I checked the word frog, in an online dictionary. That dictionary had the following definition: “An ornamental looped braid or cord with a button or knot for fastening the front of a garment.”

I like this site: http://www.9v.com/crystal/kerij-e/docs/knots.htm - a nice overview of frogs. It also has instructions on tying the “Chinese Button”.

It seems that a garment is simply a canvas and frame for decorative knotting.

Five strand plaits and portuguese sennits make great uniform rope hanging things.
Double chain knot looks good also.
