Matthew Walker path

Greetings Folks-

My goal is to tie a six strand Matthew Walker knot. I am getting half way consistent with two, three, and four strand versions using the able seaman’s (ABOK 682) and ordinary seamans’s (ABOK 683) methods. Have knot yet tried the ABOK 730 method. I can tie the unfaired knot well and the troubles come with rolling the strands up for proper dressing. Are there any good tutorials around to improve my consistency?

When progressing to the six strand version, what method do you recommend? Any advice is appreciated.

There is a bit of a threshold wrapping your head around the problem. But once you’ve passed it, you will see that from three strands and up there is no difference at all.

Do remember to thread the cord through the first formed loops when coming around to the beginning again. This part is what made me confused in the beginning.

It will no doubt look messy. exponentially so with each added strand. Persevere and tighten it in very small steps.

The multistrand versions can be seen as cascaded, or interlinked, overhand knots. The single strand can be seen as a continuous winding.

Thanks for the help WED. After tying it a good many more times I dialed in the method and can do it consistently now - it was just a matter of where to start tightening first and keeping all strands true.
