How do others deal with a total lack of motivation in projects.
I’ve kind of struck a .. knotter’s block? I had one particular project which drew me into this world, and I still love seeing knot/rope work, reviewing tutorials and such. But over the last year, (yeah, year) I’ve had a project which has sapped my motivation to complete. To the point that I have trouble with motivation on other projects.
Anyone else struggle with this? What’s the most effective way you’ve found to get past it?
I am sure that a few of the many here have experienced the same and perhaps still do.
For me, when I slam into that wall I take a note from the Nike commercial blurb, “Just Do It”.
Perseverance is the only real answer.
But there are other things that can help, such as friends who are interested. Like us.
If there is a particular stumbling block in you current project, need help, ask away.
Although it won’t help you to finish the incomplete project, learning a new knot can always help the creative juices flow. After that you may feel like jumping back on the the unfinished.
For me, motivation is not the issue. I am not only crafty with knots, I also weld, do wood work, work in the garden, and occasionally draft. With many things pulling me in different directions, it’s hard to stay on task. Projects get started, and put on hold as others take priority. I guess what motivates me the most is a deadline. I have to get a bell rope done before the boat launches. I have to get ornaments tied before Christmas. Most of my knot tying stuff is given away, and I will tell the recipient when they will get it. That gives me a deadline that I set up, and stick to.
Hi there Rrok. I personally have never hit the wall of no motivation. Like Pat, I have to many other interests . However, I look at creativity as a wheel. All my interests are the spokes and they all lead to the hub.. so that they all are linked together. By logging onto this forum or others , I am surrounded by creative and talented people all over the world. That is inspiring !!! SS , started the link POST YOUR WORK, that is motivating . What I find interesting is , whether you are new to knotting or you have been around for a while… everyone wants to see your pictures !! I want to see your pictures to help you with a problem !!! I want to see your pictures , so that we can tell you what great job you did !! I want to see your pictures , so I can be inspired too !! All these people are interested in what you do , or they would not log on to this forum . Hope you find that one thing, that gets you inspired again. I for one look forward to that happening.
If I’ve got a project I’ve hit the wall on or lost motivation for I will set it aside for awhile. To me, there is no use working on a project that you’ve lost the desire to do. I don’t have projects that I have deadlines for as a rule. Sometimes it’s a matter of starting a project that is beyond my ability at that time. Usually after a while I’ll pick up where I’ve left off, maybe a couple of days or months later. I have times where I don’t tie anything but my shoelaces for a couple of months but usually not long enough to lose my calluses. ;D
What does motivates me is looking at what other knot tyers are doing or better yet, meeting up with other knot tyers.
Knoting Matters in the mailbox every 2 months helps too.
I think most Knot Tyers or Craftsmen in general, have boxes or bags of half done jobs in them ; todays name for this is ,“Work in Progress”.
In fact I have a cane bottom chair, which is work in progress (18 months or more now ) it is either too hot or too cold to work on it, but I shall get it done one day.
Adrenaline is good for motivation, with words like, " you what it by WHEN !!?." But that is when a hobby changes to a chore.
Best bet, if you have no deadline, leave it on the shelf, and make another coffee.
