Pan Chang Knot

I am trying to get to grips with the Pan Chang Knot, I have been able to layout the knot using a board and pins. However, I cannot understand the tightening instructions given, they are not very clear, nor can I find a video of the tightening method. Can any of the wizards out there in knotland please point me in the right direction to resolve my problem? I would be eternally grateful.

It is a matter of gradually pulling on the loops to tighten the knot and in the same manner, adjusting the size of the loops. Watch the end of this video to get an idea of the tightening process.

What instructions have you been given?

  1. finish knot, remove pins
  2. pull gently on the ears until the square centre of the knot is nice and square, plus a smidge bigger than you think you want it when you’re done. do not be concerned about ear size at this stage.
  3. remove slack from ears by pulling on the edge of the pan chang opposite, remove slack from the body of the knot by pulling it to the ears.
  4. don’t let the body get misshapen, it should be square at all times.
  5. remove slack in an orderly fashion, progressing through the knot.
  6. do not be surprised if you need to make 3 or more passes of slack removal through the knot.
  7. remember that slack removal is way, way, way easier than reintroducing slack to a knot that has been over-tightened

Here’s a video set to where the tightening starts, see the rest if you want to tie without pins

My thanks to asemery and knotme for both the responses to my request for help. I have saved them both and will attempt the final stage, ie tightening the knot, in the near future. Thanks a million to you both.
