Publishing Enquiry

Dear Guild Members,

I currently in the process of putting together a book on knots and am looking to source an a writer and an illustrator for the job. The main focus of the book will be profiles on how to tie 40-50 knots – the knots to be featured are still to be decided – but each will need step-by-step instructions on how to tie them. I was hoping that someone at the guild could help or recommend someone who would be up to the task of creating said illustrations and writing the copy. I have been in touch with Bob Pearce who has been very helpful and would have asked him to post this on my behalf but he is currently experiencing computer problems i.e. a wretched virus!

If you have any thoughts, suggestions or further questions, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line – I can be reached on adam@metromediauk.com

Many Thanks,

Adam

Hi Adam,

May I ask, why are you considering writing yet another knot book?

What speciality do you intend to cover that will make it desirable to potential readers?

Derek

Hi All,
Alice reads “Romance Novels”. I tried to read one. Then I tried a second one to see if the first was some sort of error. Why would anyone write a third? Yet she always keeps the latest at hand. She enjoys them!
Could be the same with knot books. Seems to be so as I look at my book shelf. There is a hidden gem in each knot book, perhaps an illustration that is a bit better or something that catches the eye. I am currently enjoying Lindsey Philpott’s “Pocket Guide to Knots”. Many of you know Lindsey from this forum or as the current president of IGKT-PAB. At knot shows I often hand a copy to guests (also Mr. Budworths richly photographed pocket size book) as folks are often intimidated by the ABOK or H&G. Even these two smaller books are often more than a handful if no table or lap is at hand.
I think there is room at the book store for one more book, perhaps a “Field Guide to Knots” in a very small format, similar in size of pocket references used in building trades or surveying. It might be a book for us to use when we know the right knot and the name but the method is a bit fuzzy. Print it on waterproof paper… as any proper field guide! Perhaps, too, a huge “Coffee Table” big book with knots (useful and ornamental) presented as photo art. You know the sort? The Grand Canyon in 70 breathtaking views.
Some day you may be reading a book with my name on the cover and find as much enjoyment in a new viewpoint on an old subject as I do. As with Alice’s romance stories.. there are only so many combinations and themes but she seems to have fun.
I wish Adam great success with his project.
Read on! Or should I say “Write On!”

I have to say, If it turns up on Amazon when I search for KNOTS, I’ll probably buy it. Even though I’ve got a shelf full.

I think a book with things to do with knots might sell much better. There are already so many books with basic knots, and they are so cheap too.

Willeke

Hi Willeke,
Do you suggest a book of proposed projects, things to do with knots and the instructions for the knots needed? What a wonderful idea. Most of us who tie knots have 10,000 projects in mind and all the knots we need so think of books as the lead that got us to this point. New folks may have no projects and may need the inspiration to learn the knots and the projects to use them. Fine suggestion. I go to my loft and look at over two miles of line (purchased to make decorative knots, not useful tackle) and wonder what was I thinking? Well, I know what I was thinking. I thought the line is cost effective and the knots are eternal. The cross that I tie is Patrick Duceys design and for much of the line I intended to tie it to this and to Brian Fields Crosses from his booklet. You can all visit the cross at <www.khww.net> and the visit the gallery for IGKT-PAB.
Another book? There could be one for Christian knots, Brian’s crosses and Patricks crosses and other lesser published crosses. There could be one for fenders and boating software and not infringe on the other copywrite.. but just put that on one publication, as for the crosses. Cross, fenders, other standargear… cheers. IM EXCITED ABOUT A NEW BOOK.

Hi All,
My second book should be on the bookshop shelves any day now in UK, CAN, USA and AUS

Gordon

Thanks for the notice Gordon - I ordered your book several weeks ago and I have had a notice from Amazon that it will be available after about November 14 - looking forward to reading more! ;D
