Short Splice and Eye Splices

Being a fisherman means handling three strand nylon ropes quite often. I’m just a recreational fisherman not a commercial fisherman and often use 5/8in three strand nylon for my anchor lines and smaller three strand line for docking the boat.

I’ve recently made about five or six ten to twelve foot long lines for docking the boat at say a bar, restaurant on the water etc. I made them by putting in an eye splice on one end and whipping the other end. This is a fun area of knotting that’s probably a forgotten art for most people around the world and it dawned on me as I was tying these eye splices how very few people know how to do it. On my whippings I use paracord when whipping the three strand nylon lines and it works great.

Last night I had about a 50ft long piece of three strand nylon anchor rope that had somehow gotten out of form about fifteen feet from one end of the line. Usually I would simply cut the line and make another use for the fifteen feet I just cut off but decided to try and learn how to splice three strand line. I ended up using the Short Splice as they claim it’s a little stronger than a Long Splice and it felt really good when I got it to come out reasonably well. Just thought I’d share my knotting experiences and journey with fellow knotheads…something about tying ropes and learning new knots and techniques is very neat AND relaxing all at the same time. Long live knotting!

Wow?! :o --that seems oversized for 5/8" rope.
(E.g., I could see using twinned mason line.)

And how did you whip it --what whipping was used?
