Suggestions for knot practice regime ?

I'm enjoying learning new knots and practicing them. However I wish I had some way of prompting myself to tie random knots. Maybe I should just make some good ol fashioned flash cards and pick them at random. But I imagine each week adding a new knot and practice tying them all one after another each morning with coffee :wink: If any of those knot tying references apps had a favorites list and a random picker or something that would do nicely.

Two options that I immediately can see. One is the classic index card "beloved" by students (as you are into), and the other is one of the modern flash card apps (basically the same thing, but in your smartphone). There are several, I use Anki, but they are all fairly similar. Just add a number of knots with the name on the "front" of the card and e.g. a image of the finished knot (or how it is tied) on the reverse.

+1 vote for Anki - it's free and open source and works great. An Anki deck for knots on Ankiweb would be an excellent shareable resource for the IGKT!

The sharable deck sounds like a wonderful idea!

Based on experience I would say that either some active group does is, or that someone created it themselves. But an IGKT branded one would be a nice thing.

Things to think of (top of my mind over morning tea):

  • make two decks, one basic and one more advanced
  • Think about consistent tagging
  • clear easy to use images: many are going to use it to learn new knots, and "reminder for those of you forgetting the details" will not be helpful to them
  • Alla images have to be free, no photos of books

Never heard of Anki, but for iOS it would cost me 30€, or am I wrong somehow?

It looks like the iOS version is paid, which is meant to help fund development of the platform, and the running of the AnkiWeb service. It's a shame to have a blocker like that, as all the other apps look to be free. You can still use the desktop versions for free.

I took a look at Anki and the interface is awful. So put together a very basic clash cards web app. Feel free to try it out. Open source on github and I have a hosted version to try out here : https://bughunter.clodhost.com/ with 2 public card decks.

Why not use ABOK 1-3854 and random number generator. That should keep you occupied a while :slight_smile: .

That is right, they charge IOS users, but not for e.g. desktop och Android.
