What size cord should I use to cover a walking stick?

I’m trying to do a decorative cover for a walking stick. The pattern is a long 4B starting at the bottom of the grip, then a full moku hitch down the length, and terminating in a 4L TH a couple of inches from the bottom. The stick is 7/8" (2.2cm) diameter. What diameter and material cord is the best for this?

Hi Tangled.

I have done a couple of walking sticks in the past and have used a few different materials.

The ones that I have been most pleased with were covered with 2-3mm cord. I go for the synthetic media due to it staying “clean” longer. Cotton or other natural materials soils very easy and if you coat that it becomes synthetic-like.

So, what kind of look are you after? Nautical - ish, then go organic. Colorful, go synthetic.

You can also use paracord without the core strands and the bulk will be minimal, but I haven’t any experience doing the Moku or any type of coxcombing with it de-cored.

Or you can do a single lead, long pineapple THK.

I use 550 cord and colored jute twine. Usually I wrap the stick with a series of half hitches so it makes a nice spiral pattern. See the medicine stick above the door picture. I also just made a hat “rack” net for hanging various small items and hats I don’t want to misplace. I used #18 bankline for the top with a bimini twist and also sisal twine for the netted part. Plus it looks pretty.
