I was going to get something from classic marine to whip rope and wanted something to make a ditty bag as well. Any suggestions would be welcome. Thx. Oh, and a needle size would be good as well.
My personal favourite when it comes to whipping, is to use black tarred twisted line.
Are you asking about what cordage to use for making your ditty bag, or also what canvas etc?
Actually sizes of small stuff for whipping and needle sizes for ditty bag… I’m probably overthinking it, heh… I’m a bit ocd w/ overthinking stuff. I’ve always; to keep rope from unraveling, backspliced them; and so I’m a little apprehensive w/ whipping the ends. Ive a copy of the marlinspike sailor where he mentions to use #4 canvas for the bag (i think) heh…
I bought a chafing kit at a marine supply store. It comes with a sail needle, some leather pieces, and a spool of heavy thread. The thread is a waxed nylon that is very strong, I can’t break it in my hands. This is a nice material for whipping, and the sail needle is a good tool for tucking in the ends. I also have a palm thimble to help get the needle through tight spots.

In what is often called “small stuff” (approx. 6 .. 15mm),
I’ve used monofilament fishing line & mason line.

For one Ditty Bag I made, I used a sewing awl similar to this: https://amzn.to/2M8VwV4 the main reason was that I had never used one before and thought it would be fun.
Cool…i was watching Ray Mears make a canoe w/ an algonquin type of awl and thought that would be neat.
