What cord do you use for all around knotting? And, does anyone know what cord Clifford Ashley might have used. He must have always had some in his pocket.
Welcome to the forum @JAC.
It depends on what one is knotting, at work I would say 10-12 mm polypropylene or similar. At doing decorative knotting at home it would be 3-10 mm natural fiber rope, occasionally paracord.
I’ve been using hard/firm laid cotton. 1.5mm to 6mm from Bloodknot. It’s great cordage for fancy work.
Mostly prefer marine rope (synthetic) up to 8 mm i get in most nautical shops for practical work. If i cannot obtain it, whatever closest synthetic rope i got available to buy or in reserve that holds knot well (usually test it before it gets used).
For more decorative work, Jute Rope. Not cheap, but nice to work with and holds knots really well.
My Favorites are dependent on the project.
For just plain tying of knots - accessory cord.
For work related and climbing - 10.5 mm ropes.
For decorative - paracord and Lacrosse lacing.
For fine detail decorative - Venetian blind cord.
For Nautical themed - hard laid cotton cord.
SS
3mm polyester cord cover,
pretty colours for decorative,
hard-wearing, and strong for around well over 100 pound weight. it’s like paracord but without the core. easy to clean
can get custom colour blends if you can find a braider
Thanks to both for the suggestions. I’ve been knotting for ~60 years, and just returning to it. My Ashley Book of Knots seemed to be a first edition! Think I might prefer a sinnet or braid for all around use. The local hardware store has nylon that is too slippery or too stiff. By the way, I recently found a pdf of TABK can could be OCR’ed, but I guess everyone on this list knows that–or maybe I got it from this list?
